September 16, 1916 – December 11, 2004) was a renowned Carnatic vocalist. She was the first musician ever to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor. MSSubbulakhsmi was born to Shanmukhavadivu (Veena Vidwan) and Subramaniya Iyer on 16 Sep,1916 in a musical family, in the temple town of Madurai situated in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. MS started learning Carnatic music from a very early age and released her first recording at the age of 10. She then began her Carnatic classical music training under Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer and then Hindustani classical training under Pandit Narayan Rao Vyas. Her first public performance was during the Mahamaham festival at Kumbakonam. Then, she performed countless musical forms in different languages such as Hindi, Bengali , Gujarati , Marathi, Tamil , Malayalam, Telugu , Sanskrit and Kannada. Subbulakshmi had participated in music concerts all over the world,but her participation in the concerts at New York in 1970,London in 1982 and Moscow in 1987 had a special significance in her life.17 January,2001 was a very important day in karnatak classical music when MSSubbulakshmi was given a national award by Ramaseva Mandal in bangaluru.She was the first woman who recived this prestigious award. Doctor Who Proms was a concert showcasing incidental music from the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, along with classical music, performed as part of the BBC’s annual Proms season on 27 July 2008 in the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Proms are a series of classical concerts presented yearly at the Royal Albert Hall, aimed at a broader and more populist audience than typically attends classical music concerts, with tickets available at a low cost. The Doctor Who Prom was the thirteenth concert in the 2008 Proms season, and was “expressly designed to introduce young children to concert-going. The Doctor Who Prom showcased the work of Murray Gold, who has composed the incidental music for Doctor Who since its return in 2005. Other classical pieces were also played. The concert was conducted by Ben Foster and Stephen Bell, and performed by the BBC Philharmonic. It was presented by actress Freema Agyeman, who played companion Martha Jones on Doctor Who. Other Doctor Who actors and performers dressed as Doctor Who monsters also made appearances on stage and in the audience. The concert included video montages of scenes from Doctor Who and a specially filmed “mini-episode” of Doctor Who called “Music of the Spheres”, which was presented on a screen above the orchestra and included live interactive elements.
